Description of Services

Comic Art/Anime Workshop 
Students learn fun and easy comic and anime drawing techniques infused with classic portraiture and figure drawing skills to create their own superhero or villain. This workshop also infuses creative writing techniques as students write a profile of their superhero or villain, including powers, motivations and family story.
 

In the Comic/Anime Art workshop, students will learn comic art techniques that include drawing the face and drawing a figure in space. Students will learn the basic drawing techniques and be able to duplicate them. Students will learn how to create emotions through changing facial features.

Students will view different examples of current comic/anime characters, and discuss the methods used by the artists and the stories behind the characters. Students will use the hero/villain worksheet to create a story for their character. Students will then follow instructor modeling in methods of drawing the face and background. Once their drawing is complete, students will use markers to add color to their character portrait. When designs are completed and colored, students will hang completed drawings and character profiles and participate in a group critique.

The instructor teaches the lesson in short easy to follow steps, and checks the progress of students as they are completing each step. Students will exhibit progress by completing each step successfully. Indicators of progress are participation in discussion of comic/anime art, completion of character profile, completion of pencil sketch drawing, completion of marker coloring, and participation in group critique and share.

Instructor will continuously assess student progress and participation during the workshop, and specifically during the group critique at the conclusion of the workshop.

Community Mural 
The Community Mural project asks students to interview members of their community and think about the important ideals and symbols that represent them. Students then learn drawing and painting techniques, followed by painting a representative mural on paper, canvas or approved wall surface.

In the Community Mural project, students will explore the art form of mural creation. Students will learn the history of mural art and interview members of their community to decide on a theme for a mural. Students will then create symbols that represent that theme and complete a sketch. They will then paint the mural using painting techniques that include shading and color blending. The community mural project can help engage students in their own surroundings and give them a greater understanding of identity and self confidence. The mural project also creates a lasting visual image of community ideals and goals.

Students will view different examples of murals and discuss why images and symbols were chosen. They will then use community interviews to create themes and symbols for their own mural. Instructor will model and teach drawing and painting techniques to prepare students to execute mural.

Students will exhibit progress by completing each step successfully. Indicators of progress are; participation in discussion of mural history, completion of community interviews, completion of mural sketches, participation in group painting and group critique, and completion of a community mural.

Graffiti Art 
Capture your student's interest with a hip and current unit on graffiti art. Students learn to appreciate and create legal forms of graffiti, along with an understanding of the consequences and penalties for illegal graffiti. Using pencil and oil pastels, students will learn to create their own graffiti art, focusing on 3-dimensional lettering and using color contrast as a tool to create depth in art work.

In the Graffiti Art workshop, students will explore the art form of graffiti art. Students will learn the difference between illegal and legal graffiti. Students will create their own graffiti art design using pencil and oil pastel. Students will learn about the cultural phenomenon of graffiti art, and how graffiti artists are able to create the illusion of 3-dimensions using line and color. Students will learn the basic techniques and be able to duplicate them.

Graffiti is an art form that combines modem icons and symbols with traditional elements of art like color theory and depth. Most students are excited and engaged in the learning process. Graffiti reaches students who might normally be disengaged, educates them about more than art, and connects with them in their world.

Students will view different examples of current legal graffiti art designs, and discuss current laws and consequences for illegal graffiti. They will then use pencil to learn techniques to create lettering and adding 3-dimensional design elements. Once their design is complete, students will use oil pastels and learn techniques of color mixing and contrast to color their designs. When designs are completed and colored, students will participate in a group critique.

Graffiti Art Extended Workshop 
Capture your student's interest with a hip and current unit on graffiti art. Students learn to appreciate and create legal forms of graffiti, along with an understanding of the consequences and penalties for illegal graffiti. Students will learn to create their own graffiti art, focusing on 3-dimensional lettering and using color contrast as a tool to create depth in art work once they have learned these skills, students will then complete an extended project putting those techniques to use. Sites may choose from a graffiti t-shirts project or a graffiti mural project.

Students will create their own graffiti art design using pencil and oil pastel. Students will learn about the cultural phenomenon of graffiti art, and how graffiti artists are able to create the illusion of 3-dimensions using line and color. In the extended project students also learn about the ideals of their own community and how to translate those ideals into symbols. The extended project asks students to work as a group to use graffiti to improve the world around them, whether through a fundraiser for their school or center or a mural that reflects their community.

Zulu Beads 
In Zulu Beads, students learn about the Zulu tribe of South Africa and their bead-working traditions. This includes assigning meaning to the colors used that imply a person's personality and status within the tribe. Students then create their own "message bracelet" using elastic bead cord and colored beads that show who they are.

In the Zulu Beads workshop, students will explore the bead-working techniques of the Zulu tribe of Africa, and learn how their patterns and color choices reflected roles in society. Students will understand the meaning of the Zulu bead colors and be able to apply them to their own roles in society and personalities. Students will then create their own beaded bracelet, applying this knowledge in practice. Since many of my students are of African American descent or of cultures that are in the African Diaspora (Haitian, Jamaican...) learning about the strong, creative and proud tribe of the Zulu is also an important part of building their self identity and confidence.

Students will view different examples of Zulu beadwork, and discuss the cultural significance and parallels to our society. They will then use the color meaning chart to choose the colors that reflect their roles in society and personalities, Students will then create their own bracelets. When bracelets are complete, students will participate in a group share.

The instructor teaches the lesson in short easy to follow steps, and checks the progress of students as they are completing each step. Students will exhibit progress by completing each step successfully. Indicators of progress are; participation in discussion of Zulu beadwork, choosing color meaning that apply to them, completion of the bracelet, and participation in group share.

Instructor will continuously assess student progress and participation during the workshop, and specifically during the group share at the conclusion of the workshop.
