The Broward County Cultural Division Teachers, of the Year Award
Teachers from public, charter and private schools, whose primary assignment is in an arts discipline, including dance, drama, music, visual arts, literary, and media arts (photography, film, and video); and who are certified in that arts discipline are eligible to apply. The application should be fully completed by the arts teacher, and the principal needs to write a letter nominating the selected teacher.
Applicants who are finalists will be required to be observed in the classroom by members of the selection panel between Septembe and October 2013 finalist are required to attend the event on Novermeber 6, 2013 at the Broward Center for the Performoiing Arts.

APPLICATION WORKSHOP:
Increase your chances of being selected by attending the Application Workshop to learn about compiling a quality application package, and how to submit it electronically.
SELECTION CRITERIA:
Recipient of the Arts Teacher of the Year Awards are determined by a selection panel composed of members of the Arts in Education Committee, which is a sub-committee of the Broward Cultural Council. The Broward Cultural Council is a 23-member advisory board appointed by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners. The panelists score the applications, with the top-scored three to five applicants becoming semi-finalists, who then undergo classroom visits conducted by three to five members of the selection panel. The following criteria are used to score the application and conduct the classroom evaluation.
Application Must Address the Following:
- Education and professional development
- Views on education
- Commitment to teaching as a profession
- Connecting the classroom to the “real world”
- Principal’s endorsement and nomination letter
- Support materials
Classroom Evaluation
Knowledge and Skills – to what extent does the teacher demonstrate a mastery of subject content and related skills?
Environment – to what extent does the environment:
- Celebrate the art form(s)?
- Reflect the diversity of the students?
- Reinforce the learning standards/goals?
- Encourage creativity?
Methods – to what extent does the teacher:
- Demonstrate an ability to help students learn content about the art form?
- Demonstrate an ability to help students learn technique in the art form?
- Demonstrate an ability to help students appreciate the art form?
- Encourage self-initiated learning in the art form?
- Make connections to other curriculum areas?
- Provide opportunities for all students to achieve?
- Encourage the development of higher-order thinking skills?
- Provide opportunities for students to define and solve artistic problems?
- Value the contributions of the students?
- Provide opportunities for students to work in groups as well as individually?
- Provide opportunities for students to engage in self-and peer-evaluation?
- Encourage creativity?
Effect on Students – to what extent do the students:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the teacher’s expectations (i.e. the learning goals/standards)?
- Actively engage themselves in learning?
