Airport Volunteer Andrew Solomon is in San Rafael, California this
month bonding with his new seeing eye dog, a one and a half year old
Labrador Retriever. Andrew lost his last dog, Vernon, after almost 14 years
together, when he discovered a tumor on the dog that was inoperable. His
new companion was raised by a host family since he was about 10 weeks old.
 Andrew is
in training with his new Labrador for another two weeks, and then he
graduates with his new partner. They are scheduled to return home to Fort
Lauderdale on Sunday, March 28, on a complimentary Southwest Airlines
flight. Guide Dogs for the Blind provided Andrew with his first dog,
Vernon, as well as his new dog, free of charge. Guide Dogs for the Blind is supported primarily through donations. www.guidedogs.com or (800)

Homeowner Outreach Meeting for potential participants in the Voluntary
Residential Sound Insulation Pilot Program. This program will involve the
installation of sound insulation materials in 50 residential units which
are designed to reduce aircraft-generated noise in homes located in close

improvements for eligible properties include upgrades to the weak “noise
paths” into a home, particularly windows, doors, and other openings. In
some cases, ventilation upgrades, including air conditioning will also be
offered. For information about the program, please visit the Pilot Program

The Broward County
Aviation Department has launched a completely redesigned website for Fort
Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) that is now more user
friendly, easier to navigate, and available in 56 languages.
We have added an abundance of relevant passenger and airport visitor
information, with an attractive new look and feel. Navigating the
site is simpler, with enhancements like drop down menus. Every page
on the website has a printer-friendly option. Flight information, the most
popular section of the website, is prominently located on the homepage
along with a new design for the Transportation and Parking pages. We’ve
added a Traveler Tips page as well as a comprehensive site map at the
bottom of the home page that helps even the most website-challenged
visitors find exactly what they’re looking for.
Check out the new site at
the same address we’ve always had, www.fll.net, and see what FLL has to
offer.
Total passenger traffic for the month of
January was 1,966,241, up 4.1% over January 2009. International traffic was
306,405, up 5.7% over January last year.
January marked the 5th consecutive month of positive
growth and was the highest month on record for international traffic. New service by the Colombian carrier
Aires and a strong month for most of the Canadian carriers contributed to
the growth in international traffic.
January continued the trend
of growth that began last September. New service by JetBlue (up 14.0%), Virgin
America, AirTran (up 10.7%), Midwest, and Spirit (up 6.4%) all contributed
to the growth in traffic and offset decreases by several legacy carriers
including American, Continental, and US Airways.
Of the top 35 US airports,
FLL ranked 10th in terms of total traffic growth for the month
of January and was 1st in the state.
