FLL was the
site of serious training for three young
Labrador Retrievers recently. These are not your typical fun loving puppies,
but future guide dogs for individuals with visual impairments. The puppies
from the Southeastern Guide Dogs and their handlers spent two hours in the
airport completing their familiarization training. This included general
obedience, screening practice at our checkpoints with the Transportation
Security Administration, and riding a shuttle around the terminals.
Southeastern Guide Dogs is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to
create and nurture a partnership between a visually impaired individual and
a guide dog. Since 1982, they have developed more than 2500 guide dog
partnerships. They presently have more than 700 active partnerships and will
graduate about 70 dogs this year. For more information about this program,

FLL may notice work on the terminal canopies by the curb on the Departure
(Upper) Level. During the evening hours, workers are removing and
replacing the soffits in Terminals 2, 3, 4, as well as the pedestrian
bridges to the parking garages. New lighting and a public address system
will also be installed. On the Upper Level of Terminal 4, workers will
extend the canopy an additional 120 feet. This will provide added protection
from the sun and inclement weather.
special canines and their law enforcement partners recently used the
airport for their regular training. These explosive detection dogs are
required to train for eight hours a week to maintain their skills in
detecting a wide variety of explosives. The baggage conveyor belts,
noise from the traffic and loudspeakers, and passengers looking for
their luggage all create a challenging and excellent training
dogs from BSO, Federal Police, FBI, Miramar, Pembroke Pines, and US
Customs participated in the recent airport training. The teams also
train at other public locations including Port Everglades, bus depots,
Spirit Airlines became FLL’s “Hometown” airline and moved its
offices to Broward County in May 1999. They carried over 4 million
passengers in 2009 and is the largest carrier at Fort
Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport with 47 daily departures and
39% of the airport’s international capacity. Spirit Airlines flies
non-stop to 15 domestic and 21 international destinations.

Allegiant Airlines will begin nonstop service between Savannah, Georgia
(SAV) and FLL, which is the first time this route will be flown.
The new service will start on November 18, and will operate twice weekly
on Thursday and Sunday. Allegiant is offering a low, introductory
fare of $29.99 one-way, which must be purchased by October 5, 2010.
Additionally, Allegiant will also begin new, nonstop service between
Elmira, N.Y. (ELM) and FLL on November 19. Flights with operate
twice weekly with service on Monday and Friday and an introductory fare
as low as $64.99 one-way and must be purchased by October 10, 2010.
