Carlos A. Alves

Biography

Carlos Alves has been serious about art since he was a child and it shows in his passion for making things out of clay, glass, metal, salvaged artifacts, and recycled objects. Drawing from his Cuban roots and his Miami, Florida upbringing, Carlos’ themes encompass love, hope, history, culture, politics, nature, animals and a kinship with the sea.

He graduated with an MFA from Illinois State, a BFA from the University of Miami, and a scholarship to Scuola Lorenzo Di Medici in Italy. Alves is now applying his artistry to large public and private artwork projects throughout the US and abroad.  He has been working closely with wife and partner JC Carroll for over fifteen years, collaborating in all aspects of public art from concept, design to installation. JC comes from a theater and set/design background and together, they make magic. Currently in the works:

The pair is in early design stages for artwork located at the new Broward Addiction Recovery Center and the Nancy J. Cotterman Center buildings in Broward, and the Dade County Children’s Courthouse where they will incorporate “portraits” done by local school children into their artwork on a 186 foot entry wall.

They both enjoy art projects with children. Carlos says that if his art works for kids then it really works. In his mind the artist needs to create a work that can be appreciated by a wide range of people. They have a therapy dog named “Coquette” that assists the pair at workshops and events with children and people with disabilities.
