Biography

Virginia Fifield is originally from Canada where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from York University in Toronto. From there she was hired as Head Assistant and Master Class teaching assistant at the Banff School of Fine Arts.  She returned to Toronto to pursue her career as a professional artist where her work was exhibited with commercial and public galleries. She was awarded numerous grants and her work is held in public and private collections in Canada.

Despite her success, she returned to school to pursue an interest in architecture at the University of Toronto and worked in that field until she moved to South Florida 14 years ago. Inspired by Florida’s fragile and magnificent beauty she returned to her first passion of fine art with her series of large scale charcoal drawings of animals.

Her work has been exhibited at local galleries and institutions including solo shows at the Hollywood Art & Culture Center and Nova Southeastern University. She has won several awards in juried exhibitions including the All Florida Competition & Exhibition at Boca Raton Museum of Art in 2011 and Art Florida in 2008 and 2010.  Recently her work was featured on PBS’s TV show ArtStreet with David Caruso at a fund raising exhibition at the Opera Gallery to benefit the South Florida SPCA.

Fifield continues to live and work in South Florida where she serves on the Board of Directors for ArtServe in Fort Lauderdale and on Art Selection Panels for Public Art in Broward County.

"My work explores how our perception of self and sense of dominance and ownership shapes and distorts our vision and understanding of our relationship to the natural world.

I work in realism and present selectively edited drawings of animal subjects in the form of portraiture. Chosen images are "re-presented”in a stark, over-scale format, deliberately devoid of color and context to strip away all sentimental and stylized stereotypical associations, to initiate a deeper contemplation and internal dialogue about the natural world and the relationship in which we coexist." - Virginia Fifield
