Mural - Mosaic Ceramic Tiles
17ft X 36ftin X 2in
2002
Mary Saunders Park
On the exterior north wall of the Community Center at Mary Saunders Park, artist Charles Humes used handmade ceramic tile, Italian Smalti, various ocean shells and cowrie to create a complex mural design which is comprised of various motifs and symbols identifying neighborhood communities and enhancing civic pride.
"My work depicts a development in large scale mosaic installation and expression incorporating my continual focus and concentration in portraying people and their specific communities. My designs are influenced by Ancient African Yoruba iconography as well as the great Medieval and Byzantine mosaics of history. My designs are sensitive site specific images employing handcrafted dramatic techniques of mosaic renderings in panoramic mural scale."
