Here it is December 2013, the last month of the calendar. The County Commission has had another productive year as we welcomed the return of the crane. No, not the native or migratory bird, but the construction (crane) variety can now be spotted in nearly every locale throughout Broward County, That crane is once again in plain view from the seagrass at Hollywood Beach and Margaritaville, all the way to the sawgrass and the complete renovation and improvement of the County’s new Everglades Holiday Regional Park.
As 2014 dawns, we look forward to further strong managed growth at our airport, FLL, and Port Everglades. The nearly $800 million new South Runway, with US 1 and FEC tunnels, is scheduled to open as soon as September. FLL has an economic impact of $1.42 billion and over the last decade has been one of the fastest growing airports in the country. It is exciting to see expansion of the terminals, doubling of the international gates, and remodeling of existing facilities all coming on-line in the near future for the traveling and visiting public. Likewise is true for Port Everglades as Florida’s No. 1 seaport by revenues, exports, and container ship calls, as well as one of the top three Cruise ports in the world! In 2014 we expect to see preparations to ramp-up for the “aquatic” crane, better known as the Port channel dredge. This will occur as we make further advances toward launching the vitally needed Port widening and deepening project for the coming Panamax mega ships.
I would be remiss if I did not also mention the cranes at the County’s new Main Courthouse and Garage facilities being constructed in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The new Courthouse is already taller than the Main Jail on its way to becoming 20 stories at completion and the 1500 car garage is slated to be on-line for public use by Spring.
So, it is certainly nice once again to be able to “feed the cranes” throughout County Commission District 6 and countywide.
December is also so busy with the Holiday Season: Chanukkah concludes on December 5th,, the Winter Solstice is December 21st , Christmas on December 25th, Kwanzaa begins December 26th,, and New Year’s Eve December 31st. We must also remember to pause and reflect on Pearl Harbor Day, December 7th, and also continue to express gratitude to all those who serve in our armed services today to prevent another “Day of Infamy”.
