District 3 Newsletter
January 2013
Thank you, District 3

First of all, I would like to thank you for your overwhelming support in the November election. I will continue to do my best to represent every resident in District 3.

Broward County keeps moving forward and I hope that 2013 will continue on that path. Our unemployment numbers are below the State of Florida and national average, in part because Broward County is putting people to work. We are expanding Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport with a new runway and updated terminals. We are building a new County Courthouse, too. I’m proud to say I led the initiative on both of those projects and construction is underway.

The airport runway project will create more than 11,000 new jobs and add millions of dollars into our local economy. Best of all, it will increase the already booming tourism industry in Broward. For 2012, visitors to the Greater Fort Lauderdale area spent over $9 billion dollars – a record. And all of these projects have not raised local taxes by one cent.

My overall goal on the County Commission is to make the quality of life for all Broward residents ideal for everyone, from young families to retirees. Over my next four years in office, I plan to make a new Convention Center hotel one of my top priorities, further increasing local tourism and putting even more local people back to work. I appreciate any constructive and creative suggestions that you have as we move forward together.

Go SOLAR Fest
Curious about solar energy for your home? Don’t miss Broward County's Go SOLAR Fest, which takes place Friday, January 25, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday, January 26, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Broward County Convention Center. Solar might be a great way to make your home or small business more energy efficient. You must register in advance on the website or by calling 954-519-1260. Saturday’s session is free.
Volunteers Needed

Broward County is looking for volunteers to help count the homeless. The survey will be conducted on Thursday, January 24 and Friday, January  25. Every homeless person in the County will be asked to complete a survey which will help Broward County get state and federal grants to aid them.

There are no specific requirements to volunteer except for concern and compassion for persons experiencing homelessness. If you don’t think you would be comfortable walking and interacting with persons living on the street, there are other areas where you can help.

You can find information online or call Kathy Wint at 954-233-1300.

Easy Ways to Pay Your Property Taxes

Save time, avoid long lines and reduce parking congestion by making your property tax payment using Broward County’s drive-through kiosk. It will be open March 29 and April 1 in the parking lot of the Governmental Center Annex building, 115 S. Andrews Ave.  The kiosk will be staffed to accept payment from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Just enter the parking lot from the S.W. 1st/Brickell Avenue (west) side of the Governmental Center and follow the signs.

Broward County staff wearing Broward County shirts and badges will be on hand to collect payments. Please be sure to pay by check and have an original tax bill stub so it can be officially stamped as “paid.”

Your property taxes can also be paid online or at any Broward County branch of Wells Fargo.

If you have questions, call 954-831-4000.
