Commissioner Sue Gunzburger

Broward County Commission, District 6

Here it is February 2014, and I would suppose many of our New Year’s resolutions have already come and gone. One of the most common resolutions is to save money. I know of a way now in February you can still keep that resolution and as a plus be environmentally conscious and proactive, too.

The Broward Water Partnership has made it easy and cost-effective for you to keep your "resolved". The Partnership is comprised of the County and 18 local governments/utilities, including the County Commission District 6 cities of Hallandale Beach, Hollywood, and Pembroke Pines. It has set a goal of saving 30 million gallons of water per day by providing rebates and other free incentives to qualifying residents that will also save you money. In addition, you will be helping to further protect our fragile South Florida fresh water supply from over utilization and further salt water intrusion.

If your home was built before 1994, you likely have older model toilets that are huge water-wasters; accounting for up to 35 percent of the average household’s water consumption. Replace those toilets with new, water-saving models and you could receive a rebate of up to $100 for each old toilet you replace. The immediate savings are impressive, but the long-term benefits you’ll see in reduced monthly water bills will be additional savings as well.

To check your eligibility and apply for a rebate, visit ConservationPays.com. You may also qualify to receive free, low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators. Additionally to reduce water use in local commercial kitchens, qualified businesses can receive free pre-rinse spray valves.

Conserving water outdoors is important, too. This can be accomplished without harming your landscaping. In fact, overwatering can actually hurt your lawn, resulting in shallow roots, weed growth, disease and fungus. For more tips on how to care for your landscape and realize water savings, visit NatureScape Broward.

All of the above is good for the wallet and the environment, but let us not forget February also celebrates the heart with Valentine’s Day on the 14th. This month we will also reflect on our nation’s elected leaders with President’s Day on February 17th, a combined national holiday to observe and celebrate the birthdays of Presidents Washington and Lincoln, February 22nd and February 12th respectively.
