November Events

Commissioner Sue Gunzburger
Broward County Commission, District 6

November is here!  By the time you read this newsletter you will have already performed on November 3rd the semi-annual ritual of adjusting your clocks and timepieces.  This “time” it is “Fall Back” one hour to begin Eastern Standard Time.
November also ushers in the start of the holiday season.  This year, the first night of Hanukkah is on November 27th and Thanksgiving is the very next day, on the 28th.

However as we prepare for this festive time of year, let us not forget those who are less fortunate and in need.  Assuming we have just about concluded another hurricane season, why not consider donating your hurricane foodstuff supplies to one of our area’s local food bank?  You can bring your donations to a County branch library, the Main Library and the Government Center in downtown Fort Lauderdale, and certain other County facilities.  Please check on-line at 365 Food Drive  for donation collection locations as well as a listing of needed foodstuffs and supplies.
Since January 2010 when I first asked the Commission to inaugurate a County 365 (year-round) Food Drive, nearly 28,600 pounds, or over 14 TONS, has been donated.  While that amount is impressive, it has not diminished the need in our greater Broward community of nearly 1.8 million people.  Even with the generous donations to date, I assure you this area’s local food banks can barely keep their cupboards stocked to meet the daily requests for food and other types of assistance.

Also when considering your food donations, please do not forget clothing you may no longer need or want to wear.  Durable, clean clothes, especially for children, are always in high demand and sought by local charities, churches, synagogues, and fraternal organizations. Especially during the holiday season, imagine how needy individuals, households, and families with children would feel to be able to dress in suitable attire and enjoy a warm holiday meal as well.  Your generous donations will more than make them feel whole.

That stated, I would be remiss if I also did not mention we honor and celebrate Veteran’s Day on November 11th.  We must always remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice, those who were wounded in action, those who have served, and the men and women now in uniform in this country and around the world keeping us safe and our freedoms secure.

Finally, if you have a question or a concern you would like to discuss with me, please contact my office at 954-357-7006, or e-mail me at sgunzburger@broward.org .   Once again, a Happy Thanksgiving to all of you and a Happy Hanukkah to all of you who celebrate.
