NATURE OF WORK
This is semi-skilled work assisting journey level automotive mechanics in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel driven automotive and related equipment.
Work involves assisting skilled automotive mechanics in installing and repairing motors and performing general maintenance tasks on automobiles, light and heavy duty trucks, graders, bulldozers, mowers, tractors, and other standard and specialized equipment. Employees in this class occasional perform general custodial tasks in maintaining service area buildings. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a skilled mechanic and is inspected for quality of workmanship in progress and upon completion.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Assists in the repair and general overhaul of automobile, light and heavy trucks, graders, mowers, bulldozers, and other automotive equipment by performing the semi-skilled and less skilled tasks.
Installs and adjusts brakes; changes spark plugs, and adjusts ignition system.
Keeps tools in clean operating condition.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Some knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools and methods of the automotive mechanic trade.
Some knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Some knowledge of the mechanical parts of automotive equipment.
Ability to perform semi-skilled mechanical duties.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and
appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from high school; some experience in repairing automotive vehicles; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
