AUTOMOTIVE ELECTRICAL TECHNICIAN I

NATURE OF WORK

This is semiskilled work assisting journeymen Electronic Technician II in specialized electrical projects in the installation, maintenance, adjustment, modification and repair of automotive electronics used by the County Mobile Equipment Fleet.

Work involves performing semiskilled tasks in electrician repairs of automobiles, trucks, trailers, emergency vehicles and other related equipment. Assignments are received from a technical supervisor in the form of oral instructions and written service orders. Work is inspected for quality and workmanship while in progress and upon completion.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Assists in the installation, adjustment and maintenance of special electrical-electronic equipment such as emergency vehicle warning lights, strobe and siren systems, starters, alternators and other related equipment.

Makes checks of quick starting systems; keeps statistics and reports.

Uses hand and power driven tools and equipment such as grinders, drills, and other related shop tools; keeps shop tools in order and keeps shop area clean of debris.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Some knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, tools and procedures as applied to the automotive electrical trade.

Some knowledge of federal and state DOT and other applicable emergency vehicle legal specifications.

Some knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines and of repair and maintenance characteristics of a wide variety of automotive equipment.

Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

Ability to use and care for various shop tools, machinery and equipment involved in the maintenance of all phases of automotive electrical equipment.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from high school; some experience in automotive electrical systems; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
