Main Page

Series VIII: Printed matter, 1959-1991 and n.d.  (0.75 linear feet)

This series includes Shaara's collection of printed materials, including a book jacket, monographs, offprints and photocopies, programs from conferences and ceremonies, publisher catalogs, and miscellaneous items such as religious tracts and a board game.

The book jacket category contains a dust jacket for The Broken Place.

The monograph category contains the following titles: Abraham Lincoln: War Opponent and War President by Gabor S. Boritt; A Brief History of Fort Leavenworth, 1827-1983; Teaching by Television, Ford Foundation; In Commemoration of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain: A Guide-Bibliography by Barrett Parker and Sylvia J. Sherman; Old Glory: The Story of Our Flag; and The Killer Angels, Ballantine Books 1975 by MS. There were a few posthumous items found among his papers and placed in this subcategory: namely, two copies of The Killer Angels, Random House, 1993 by MS (inscribed by Jeff Shaara and dated, 8 March 1997); and two copies of Gods and Generals by Jeff Shaara, signed and dated, 8 March 1997. His son wrote a heartbreaking saga of the years preceding The Killer Angels

Offprints and Photocopies include a number of different types of brochures, meeting announcements, guides, and articles on head injuries, information for heart attack victims, Civil War research, and teaching.

This category contains programs from Florida State University and professional conferences. Additionally, there are numerous programs from colleges, universities, associations and organizations for Shaara's lectures and readings. As a result of the publication of The Killer Angels, Shaara was called to participate in Civil War-related events and seminars: the Sesquicentennial Celebration in honor of General Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, the U.S. Army War College, and Gettysburg College, Civil War Institute.  There is also a program from the Florida Space Coast Writers Conference (FSCWC) in 1991.  He was a member of this conference for many years. After his death, Helen Shaara attended this conference and received a posthumous award in his honor (FSCWC's prestigious Outstanding Writer Award). The award was renamed the Michael J. Shaara Writer's Award in the following year.

Within the Publisher Catalogs and Publicity category, there are offerings from New American Library and David McKay Company promoting, respectively, Shaara's newly published novels, The Broken Place in 1968 and The Killer Angels in 1974.

Other miscellaneous items from Shaara's collection include a Civil War game called The 20th Maine: The Battle for Little Round Top and a series of religious tracts sent to the author from his readers in response to "A Matter of Conscience" and "In the Midst of Life".

Materials are arranged in six subcategories:  Book Jackets; Offprints and Photocopies; Programs; Publisher Catalogs and Publicity; and Miscellaneous. Within these categories, the items are arranged alphabetically by the author's last name or in the absence of a known author by title. Further information concerning his lectures and seminars at various institutions and organizations may be found in Series III: Correspondence - - Professional activities; Series IV: Professional papers and Series VII: Clippings.
