Making Our Library Great That’s What Friends Are For!  (back to top)

Friends of Libraries groups have their very own national week of celebration and now it’s official in Broward County, too! Broward County Mayor John E. Rodstrom, Jr. issued a proclamation declaring October 21-27 “National Friends of the Library Week” in Broward County. The 32 local Friends of the Library chapters provide library support through fundraising and advocacy under the “umbrella” organization of the Friends of Broward County Library, Inc., and they have been instrumental in the growth of the library system. Monthly meetings provide opportunities for Friends to share ideas and plan for the future, and an Executive Board comprised of individuals from local chapters and members-at-large provide guidance and support to the Friends. Friends that make a difference in our libraries every day: Before she retired, Barbara Correll was the director of school libraries in Broward County. Rather than let that knowledge go untapped, she brought her skills and experience to the Friends of Fort Lauderdale Libraries where she is currently president as well as a member of the BCL Friends umbrella group. “I absolutely love and deeply believe in libraries,” she explains. “Being a Friend and working with other Friends, volunteers and library staff – I just love being involved.”

Barbara has been instrumental in creating “First Fridays,” the book fair held at Main Library on the first Friday of each month, as well as helping to train and educate other Friends through the umbrella group. “In addition to helping libraries, being a Friend is also a great social experience. I’d recommend it to anyone.”

In June 2012, the Century Plaza Branch Library added the name Leon Slatin to its title, officially making it the Century Plaza/Leon Slatin Branch Library. Why? As a longtime library Friend, Leon Slatin has volunteered over 30,000 hours of service, processed over 380,000 reserved books for public library customers and has been a strong advocate for expanding the library, increasing the amount of public computers and popular titles and expanding library services for young people. He founded the Friends of Century Plaza Library and currently serves as its president.

A journalist by trade and Friends of Dania Beach Library president by choice, Ann Page has been involved in community service her whole life. As a fundraiser, she’s a motivated innovator who helped launch the first-ever Walk for the Dania Beach Paul DeMaio Library this past January. This Friends group raised funds for library programs such as free summer art classes for all ages and flamenco guitar performances. “I love the library. When I joined the Friends, I was so impressed. They are one hundred percent nonprofit and work together so well as a unit,” she explains. “I’m not a solo act. It’s the Friends, the wonderful library staff and the community that are helping to educate an entire generation on how important libraries really are.”

At a youthful 85 years old, Sunya “Sunnie” Eiseman has no plans to slow down her work with the Friends of North Regional/Broward College Library. She’s been volunteering there since the library opened 18 years ago and is currently their Friends president. “When I retired and moved here 22 years ago, I went looking for a library. They were building North Regional then, and I couldn’t wait for it to open so I could volunteer. And I’ve been here ever since!” A retired fashion buyer and bookkeeper, she was the library’s very first volunteer and has seen the Friends of North Regional/Broward College grow to its current number of 200 Friends. She assists processing DVDs and almost never misses her regular Tuesday and Thursday morning shifts. (“They depend on me and I find it so gratifying to be there.”) The efforts of Sunnie and the Friends help support the library in many ways – funding programs and buying needed equipment, especially during the recent economic downturn.

Pioneer Day will be held at the Oakland Park Elementary School, located at 936 NE 33rd St., Oakland Park, FL 33324. The school is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the oldest operating school in Broward County.

Books ‘n’ Bears at the Holidays Evening Event  (back to top)

Please join the Miami Dolphins and the Broward Public Library Foundation in supporting Books ‘n’ Bears at the Holidays at an evening event from 7 to 10 p.m. Thursday, November 29 at The Ritz-Carlton on Fort Lauderdale Beach, 1 North Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd. New teddy bears and cash donations will be accepted. Anyone making a contribution will receive a complimentary cocktail.

Donations will be used to host holiday parties for disadvantaged preschool children at their local libraries, creating a positive introduction to reading.

Teddy bears are also being collected at every Broward County Library branch through mid-November.

In honor of Veterans Day, the Quintet of the Gold Coast Jazz Society Band will kick off a jazz program series with a concert featuring wartime jazz standards from the past to be held at Northwest Regional Library beginning at 3 p.m. on November 10. The series continues with a drumming workshop; screenings of Ken Burns PBS series Jazz throughout November and displays.

Support for the program is provided by the Friends of Northwest Regional Library and the Broward Public Library Foundation.

Literary Feast 2013 Celebrates Its 25th Edition

Broward Public Library Foundation’s Literary Feast once again celebrates books and authors from March 15-18, 2013. The event has a twist – an in-depth look at the works and life of legendary author Edith Wharton. Four writers, all Wharton experts, will attend Literary Feast: Jennie Fields, The Age of Desire: A Novel; Irene Goldman-Price, author of My Dear Governess: The Letters of Edith Wharton to Anna Bahlmann; Francesca Segal, author of The Innocents; and Richard Guy Wilson, author of Edith Wharton at Home: Life at the Mount.

Literary Feast authors participate in a series of events that will have them speaking to donors, students and South Florida’s book-loving community, including the Night of Literary Feasts’ fund-raising cocktail reception and series of gourmet dinners on Saturday, March 16.
