Florida History and Culture Takes Center Stage @ Broward County Libraries

Looking Back at Hispanic Heritage, Henry Flagler’s Florida Dream and the Historical Commission’s Pioneer Days

The history of Florida is rich and colorful, filled with stories of conquistadors and visionaries. Many searched for golden treasure, and some looked for the fountain of youth while others sought out a good place to build a railroad.

This month, Broward County Libraries takes an eclectic look at Florida’s past, highlighting the last two weeks of Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15), the final months of Viva Florida 500 (a celebration of Ponce de Leon’s exploration of Florida) and the history of rail travel on the Florida East Coast Railway. The Broward County Historical Commission will also host Pioneer Day, an annual event held since 1973, on October 19 with a reception/recognition ceremony for Broward “pioneers.”

Pioneer Day 2013

Broward County Historical Commission joins with the City of Coral Springs and the Coral Springs Historical Society to presents Pioneer Day 2013. The 2013 Broward County “Pioneers” will be honored on October 19 at the Coral Spring Center for the Arts and the Museum of Art, located at 2855 Coral Springs Drive in Coral Springs. The event will kick off with a reception at noon followed by a ceremony at 1 p.m. It is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact the Historical Commission at 954-357-5553.

The Bienes Museum of the Modern Book Presents The Great Days of Rail Travel on the Florida East Coast at Main Library’s Bienes Museum of the Modern Book – Exhibit and Viva Florida 500 Finale

Take a ride through the past and visit The Great Days of Rail Travel on the Florida East Coast exhibit, on display at Broward County Libraries Division's Bienes Museum of the Modern Book, located on the sixth floor of the Main Library, 100 S. Andrews Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301.

On display through March 31, 2014, The Great Days of Rail Travel on the Florida East Coast takes visitors on a journey that began in 1885, when Henry M. Flagler purchased the predecessor of today's Florida East Coast Railway (FEC). The exhibition, which is drawn from the Myrna and Seth Bramson Florida East Coast Railway Archive, heralds the glories of train travel on the FEC and includes model trains from the collections of Jonathan Nelson and the Florida Citrus Model Train Society as well as images, brochures, booklets and other memorabilia from the golden days of rail passenger service.

The opening reception for The Great Days of Rail Travel on the Florida East Coast is scheduled for October 9, 2013 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Bienes Museum. The exhibit is part of the library’s finale celebration for Viva Florida 500, the 500th anniversary of Juan Ponce de Leon’s exploration of Florida.
