News Release: Broward County Highway Construction and Engineering Works to Promote Safety During Bicycle Month

Traffic Safety Presentation and Bicycle Rodeo Training

The Broward County Highway Construction and Engineering Division, in conjunction with the Broward County Parks and Recreation Division, is holding a Traffic Safety Presentation and Bicycle Rodeo Training on February 11, 2013 at Tree Tops Park in Davie, FL. This workshop teaches participants how to fit bicycle helmets correctly, bicycle/pedestrian laws and safety tips, defensive walking and bicycling skills, and how to conduct a bicycle rodeo. Participants will ride bicycles to practice the skills they will teach children during rodeos and in other educational settings. Anyone interested in teaching children about bicycle and pedestrian safety is encouraged to attend. Preregistration is required.

For more information or to preregister, call 954-577-4618 or e-mail mahorowitz@broward.org.

Broward B-cycle

Broward County’s newest mode of public transportation, Broward B-cycle, rolled into action on December 14, 2012. This bike-sharing system allows people to check out a bicycle at a public bike station for a small fee and return it to another station when done.  Broward B-cycle is a new affordable and a convenient way of taking short trips around town or connecting to other transportation such as BCT.  It is also the latest healthy way of reducing traffic congestion, pollution and carbon emissions.

In it's first year, the Broward B-cycle system established 26 stations with 275 bicycles in six Broward County cities. Milestones of the first year include:

  • 24,190 trips taken by nearly 16,000 users
  • 3,443,408 calories burned
  • 4,464 gallons of fuel saved
  • 87,804 pounds of carbon (CO2) offset

Join the two-wheel revolution and sign up to receive an annual membership* pass. Visit the Broward B-cycle Website for more information and locations.

*In recognition of Florida Bicycle Month, beginning March 1, you can enter Bikemonth at checkout for $10 off a B-cycle annual membership!

Volunteers Sought for Tandem Skill Development Program

Parks and Recreation Division’s Special Populations Section is seeking volunteers for its Tandem Bike Skill Development Program for adults who are blind or visually impaired. The program will meet for two hours, once a week for five consecutive weeks in February and March. Sighted and blind/visually impaired riders will be paired on tandem bicycles (bicycles built for two riders) to form a partnership. The program provides blind/visually impaired adults with opportunities for physical activity, fun, fitness and social interchange. To volunteer or for more information, call 954-357-8170 or email SpecialPopulations@broward.org.
