Krugiodendron ferreum

An evergreen shrub or small tree that has gray bark with woody ridges. The leaves are simple, glossy, and deep green and persist for two to three years. The flowers are small and yellowish-green, with no corollas on auxiliary clusters. The fruit is glossy black, with a thin skin and a single hard stone. The wood, which lacks growth rings, is extremely hard (hence the common name). It is the densest of all woods native to South Florida.

Wildlife – The small flowers are visited by a variety of bees and wasps.

These trees are used for posts, crossties, and canes.
