Children in swim class and girl jumping from pool side to instructor in the poolThere are many opportunities to learn how to swim in Broward County. Besides the County Park classes listed below, numerous pools participate in the SWIM Central swimming program.

Swim lessons are offered at C.B. Smith, Central Broward Regional, and T.Y. parks during the summer. Swim lessons application. The application can be printed and filled out at home and then brought with you when you come to the park.

Preschool + Parent
This program is designed for children ages 2 through 3 years who have no swimming abilities, are frightened of the water, and cannot jump into the water by themselves. (Children who are not toilet-trained are required to wear disposable swimpants.)

Parents participate with their children in the water. The class will focus on water familiarization and the following swimming skills:

  • Submerge Face Under Water
  • Rhythmic Breathing
  • Jump Water Entry
  • Prone Float
  • Water Walk
  • Rear Float
  • Front Over-arm Strokes
  • Prone Glide
  • Rear Glide
  • Prone Kick Glide
  • Rear Kick Glide
  • Combined Front Stroke
  • Rear Elementary Arm Stroke
  • Combined Rear Stroke

Preschool
For children ages 3 through 5. Parents must attend the class but will not be allowed in the water. The focus is on water familiarization and the following swimming skills:

Beginner
This program is for children 6 through 10 years old who have no swimming skills. The class objective is to learn the following swimming skills:

  • Back Glide
  • Front Glide with Kick
  • Back Glide with Kick
  • Elementary Backstroke
  • Front Crawl Arms
  • Front Crawl

Advanced Beginner
This program is for children 6 through 10 years old who are comfortable with putting their face in the water and have some swimming skills but cannot perform any swimming strokes. The class focuses on the following skills:

  • Breath Holding
  • Bobbing
  • Jumping
  • Front Float
  • Front Glide
  • Back Float
  • Back Glide
  • Front Glide with Kick
  • Back Glide with Kick
  • Elementary Backstroke
  • Front Crawl Arms
  • Front Crawl
  • Backstroke

  • Sidestroke Arms
  • Scissor Kick

Intermediate
Students ages 6 through 10 who have successfully completed the Advanced Beginner class, or after testing are found to possess the equivalent skills, can join this class, which focuses on the following skills at Intermediate Proficiency:

  • Front Crawl
  • Backstroke
  • Breaststroke
  • Sidestroke
  • Elementary Backstroke
  • Dolphin Kick
  • Butterfly Arms
  • Butterfly
  • Treading Water

Advanced
Swimmers ages 6 through 10 who have successfully completed the Intermediate class, or after testing are found to possess the equivalent skills, can join this class, which focuses on the following skills at a Swimmer Proficiency:

  • Front Crawl
  • Backstroke
  • Breaststroke
  • Sidestroke
  • Elementary Backstroke
  • Dolphin Kick
  • Butterfly Arms
  • Butterfly
  • Treading Water
  • Surface Dive

Session Information
Child smilingAll swim programs meet for eight lessons total except for weekend sessions, which meet for six lessons total. Classes are 30 minutes long and meet Mondays through Thursdays, or 45 minutes long on Saturdays and Sundays. Minimum enrollment must be met for classes to proceed. Rained-out classes will be made up on Fridays. Each session is limited to two rain-out lessons only. Call the park for details.

Registration Information
Registration for all swimming sessions will be open seven days a week at each of the participating parks starting May 4. Refer to each park for specific times and locations. Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Classes are subject to cancellation if minimum registration is not attained. Make checks payable to the Broward County Board of County Commissioners. Credit cards are also accepted at the park. The fee is $50 plus tax per session. 

Tips for Parents
1. All participants must be dressed and ready to swim at the time classes begin. Parents should bring towels for their children.
2. If you need to feed your child before class, meals should be light. Greasy food, candy, and soda are not recommended.
3. Participants should be in good health. No one with a cough, cold, fever, infection, open sore, or rash, or who looks or acts sick, will be allowed to participate.
4. Parents and family members are encouraged to stay and watch. Please notify a supervisor if you plan to leave the swimming facility during lessons.
5. Pool toys and teaching materials are supplied by the park. We discourage bringing toys and flotation devices of any kind from home.
6. We encourage parents to ask questions or raise concerns.

All cancellations or date transfers must be made at least 14 days prior to the first day of class. Cancellations/transfers are subject to a $10 fee. Refund requests must be submitted in writing or by fax to park management and accompanied by the original receipt.
