Responsibilities
Improper disposal and management of solid waste and the unauthorized presence of hazardous materials results in or contributes to air and water pollution, land blight, and nuisance conditions. Therefore, the Broward County Environmental Protection and Growth Management Department requires that certain solid waste activities and facilities, transfer stations, and waste transporters be managed to eliminate deleterious effects upon the quality of air, water, soil, animal, environmental and human health.
The Waste Management Section of the Pollution Prevention, Remediation and Air Quality Division is responsible for:
- Administering the licensing and compliance for all solid waste management facilities, waste transporters, borrow pit reclamation areas, and hazardous material transfer stations within Broward County as required under county and state regulations, specifically Broward County Code of Ordinances, Chapter 27, Article VI, Solid Waste; Article XII, Hazardous Materials; Article XVII, Waste Transporters (once at Municipal Code Web Site, select the plus sign next to Chapter 27- Pollution Control in the left column. This will expand Chapter 27 to show all Articles. Click on Article you wish to see); and State Solid Waste Rule, Chapter 62-701 of Florida Administrative Code (PDF);
- Conducting inspections at all licensed facilities to ensure compliance with environmental regulations;
- Administering the state delegated solid waste licensing and compliance program.
