Broward County staff prepared several map options for the Board of County Commissioners to consider in the 2011 redistricting effort. Each option was prepared using “Fair Districting” standards for Federal congressional and State legislative districts, which were added to the Florida Constitution by voter referendum in the November 2010 election.
In addition, members of the public were invited to submit maps. Planning and Redevelopment Division staff reviewed all maps submitted by members of the public to ensure consistency with the Broward County Charter and Fair Districting Standards, and submitted maps meeting those standards to the County Commission for consideration.
Small scale printable versions of each map, along with U.S. Census 2010 population and voter registration data were presented in portable document format (PDF). “PDF” files can be opened with Adobe Acrobat Reader.
In addition, interactive maps were presented as “KMZ” files which is a compressed file format for Keyhole Markup Language (KML.) A "KMZ" file can be opened and viewed using Google Earth or the Web-based Florida House of Representatives “MyDistrictBuilder” software.
- To open a "KMZ" file in Google Earth, download and save the file to your computer and double click the file. (Note: you must have Google Earth installed on your computer to open the files this way.)
- To open a "KMZ" file with “MyDistrictBuilder” software, download and save the file to your computer, access the MyDistrictBuilder website, and open map file within the program.
All maps submitted for consideration by the County Commission were posted to this website. At their October 18, 2011 workshop, the County Commission extended the deadline for public map submittals from October 11, 2011 to October 21, 2011 at 5 p.m.
