Broward County Well Tested Positive for Fecal Indicator

The Broward County Water Treatment Plant 2A, which serves customers in portions of the City of Deerfield Beach, Pompano Beach, and Lighthouse Point detected fecal indicators (E. coli) in one of its wells on December 19, 2013. As our customers, you have a right to know what happened and what is being done to correct this situation. The affected well has been physically disconnected from the system. We have been collecting samples in our distribution system to ensure the continued safety of our water.

What should I do?
At this time, no action is necessary by Broward County Water and Wastewater Customers. The Broward County Water Treatment Plant 2A has been on Free Chlorine since December 5, 2013. The lowest chlorine residual since December 17, 2013 has been 3.7 ppm, therefore the water treatment plant was achieving 4-log virus treatment (99.99% virus inactivation) of source water when this incident happened and the customers served by the Broward County Water Treatment Plant 2A are not required to boil the water.

What is being done?
The well has been physically disconnected from the raw water system and will not be placed back in service until further testing indicates that it is safe to put back in service.
