Task Force Reports on New Courthouse and Parking Garage

The Broward County Courthouse Task Force has reached a consensus that building a new courthouse would be more cost effective than renovating the existing building. The task force also agreed that the best location to build a new courthouse would be on the site where the current judicial parking garage is located, just west of the courthouse building. In addition, the group found that a new parking garage will be necessary in the near future.

The task force was created in December after the courthouse was closed due to a water main break that caused substantial flooding. Additional problems soon followed. The oldest section of the courthouse is about 400,000 square feet and consists of the West and Central wings, which house 38 courtrooms. Consultants have said that all building systems in this area such as plumbing and electrical are beyond their “useful” life.

The third meeting of the Broward County Courthouse Task Force was held Friday, April 3, 2009, and continued discussions on the feasibility of building a new courthouse and parking garage. A final report with recommendations will be sent to the Broward County Commission for review and discussion. All documents and relevant materials can be found at www.broward.org/courthousetaskforce.

Environmentally Friendly Businesses and Residences to be Recognized

The Broward County Environmental Protection and Growth Management Department and the Broward County Board of County Commissioners will recognize several local businesses and homeowners for their outstanding environmentally-responsible business practices and personal environmental initiatives. Each business and homeowner will receive an Emerald Award for their exceptional efforts in protecting the environment at a special ceremony followed by a brief reception at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, in the Broward County Commission Chambers, Room 422, of the Governmental Center, 115 S. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale.

The program recognizes businesses for their voluntary efforts in four areas: waste reduction, recycling, improved operating practices, and other “green” strategies that reduce pollution and waste. Both large and small businesses are eligible. One business is also honored with the title “Environmental Business of the Year,” which will be announced at the ceremony.

The Emerald Awards program also includes a component to reward homeowners, governments and other groups that have incorporated NatureScape Broward techniques into their landscaping. NatureScape yards are designed to conserve water by using native plants in place of lawn; provide food, water and shelter for wildlife; use integrated pest control practices; reduce storm-water contaminated by pesticides and fertilizers; and recycle yard waste into mulch and compost.
