Hurricane Season is Here – Are You Prepared?
It’s time to prepare for the 2009 Hurricane Season, which runs from June 1 through November 30.
• 2009 Broward County Hurricane Preparedness Guide
To assist residents with preparing a hurricane plan, residents in Broward County are encouraged to review the Broward County Hurricane Preparedness Guide online at www.broward.org/hurricane. The guide features important tips, information, maps, telephone numbers and website addresses in English, Spanish and Creole.
• Free Subscription to Hurricane Update E-mail System
To keep informed on impending storms, residents are strongly encouraged to subscribe to Broward County’s free Hurricane Update E-mail System. The system provides residents with information from the Broward County Emergency Operations Center before, during and after a hurricane. To subscribe, visit www.broward.org/hurricane and click on the Hurricane Update E-mail System.
• Vulnerable Population Registry
The Vulnerable Population Registry allows people who are disabled, frail or have health issues to register in advance with their city so that emergency workers may plan a better response to vulnerable residents in a recovery effort following a hurricane or other emergency. Each municipality may use the registry list in a different way, based on the city’s recovery effort. For additional information, visit www.broward.org/hurricane or call 954-831-4000.
• Free Disposal of Yard Waste
To assist residents in preparing for the hurricane season, Broward County will accept residential yard waste at no charge at the County’s three trash transfer stations every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The free service is available to all Broward County residents (except residents living in Pembroke Pines, Parkland, Pompano Beach and Hallandale Beach, which are not Broward County Resource Recovery partners). Proof of Broward County residency is required.

| County Launches New Economic Stimulus Web Site
Broward County Government is moving quickly to ensure local communities receive a fair share of economic stimulus dollars made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA).
The ARRA legislation provides for $787 billion in tax cuts and spending and represents the largest single cash infusion into the economy in American history. Many of the spending initiatives will be funded by grants awarded for investments in infrastructure, environmental protection, alternative energy, and improved healthcare and educational opportunities.
Broward County has created a special Web site, www.broward.org/recovery, with details on all local stimulus activities, including tracking of dollars received, dollars spent, jobs created, and subcontractors and sub-grantees involved. The site also includes links to federal and state recovery Web sites, and business opportunities and economic assistance programs available to local residents. Broward County Transit to Hold Five Community Forums
Broward County Transit is partnering with cities throughout the County to host transit community forums that will allow attendees to voice their concerns, ideas and recommendations for a future public transportation plan.

Health Care Services Helps Promote
Tri-County National HIV Testing Day
National HIV Testing Day will be observed Saturday, June 27. Broward County Health Care Services Section, along with The RCP Movement and various community partners, will recognize this day with a free “Show U Know 2009” benefit concert from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Mills Pond Park, 2201 N.W. Ninth Ave., Fort Lauderdale.
Currently, Florida is third in the nation for the number of reported AIDS cases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Admission to the concert is free, but attendees must provide a current HIV test result. Free HIV tests are being administered now through June 27 at various sites throughout the county. Once administered, clients will receive a concert ticket.

“Meet the Agencies” Small Business Workshop Series Continues June 24
The Office of Equal Opportunity Small Business Development Division’s “Meet the Agencies” free workshop series continues on Wednesday, June 24, featuring Waste and Recycling Services and Water and Wastewater Services. The workshops are designed to provide small business owners with an insider’s look at how Broward County agencies operate and how they work with the local business community to provide opportunities in County procurement.

World Refugee Day Event June 20
Broward County Family Success Administration Refugee Services will host an event to celebrate World Refugee Day on Saturday, June 20, 2009, starting at 11 a.m. at the South Regional Broward College Library, 7300 Pines Blvd. in Pembroke Pines. The event is free and open to the public.
World Refugee Day is an observance highlighting the struggles and triumphs of refugees throughout the community. The three-hour program will showcase the many contributions of the Cuban, Haitian, Colombian, and Venezuelan communities, the countries of origin of the many refugees and asylees living in Broward County. The program will also include cultural dances and music performances, displays of cultural items and traditional dishes. Community, non-profit and government agencies will have display booths with information and giveaways.

Port Everglades Introduces New Web Site
Cruise passengers sailing out of Port Everglades can now book a hotel room and plan their pre- and post-cruise vacation directly from the Port Everglade’s updated Web site at www.porteverglades.net and through the main Broward County Web site at www.broward.org/port. Similarly, international shippers and maritime service providers now have access to the Port’s tariff, business directory, ship schedule and map all just a click away on the same web page.
The updated site has a fresh style and navigational ease that compliments South Florida’s nautical character and the Port’s diverse business mix of cruise, cargo, petroleum, foreign-trade zone and real estate. Boxes on each page highlight the site’s most popular features such as the Daily Ship Schedule, Statistics, Tariff, and the Port Map.

Use Caution When Hiring Tree Trimmers
Hurricane season begins June 1, but storms with gusty wind and damaging lightning can occur any time in South Florida. The Broward County Permitting, Licensing and Consumer Protection Division warns homeowners to avoid danger to life and property, tree trimming should be performed by a licensed individual.
The Tree Trimmer Ordinance requires a sole proprietor or a business to obtain a Tree Trimmer license before advertising, offering or performing tree trimming in Broward County. Requirements for government agencies that trim trees are also included in the ordinance.
As required by the ordinance, at least one licensed person must be at each job site while tree trimming is being performed; that person must also directly supervise any unlicensed employees. The name, phone number and license number of the sole proprietor or business must be posted on the vehicle being used for the business.
