New River Greenway Now Open for Recreation

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has officially turned over the New River Greenway to Broward County, the first segment of a planned countywide network of safe and clean bicycle, pedestrian paths, nature trails and waterways. Residents can now recreate along the greenway that parallels I-595 from 136th Avenue to University Drive in Plantation. The New River Greenway is part of a $5.9 million grant provided by the FDOT to Broward County. However, when plans to build the I-595 Express Corridor got underway, the location of the planned Greenway was modified and completed by FDOT.

An additional segment of the Greenway from east of Davie Road to State Road 84/Marina Mile is currently being built. Broward County has plans to further expand the Greenway west to Markham Park and will enhance the Greenway with installation of benches, shelter, landscaping and additional improvements.
