Workdays Help Clear Parks and Natural Areas
Broward County Parks and Recreation Division is
offering a free public workday, for all ages, at the
Highlands Scrub Natural Area, 4050 N. Dixie Hwy.,
Pompano Beach, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday,
October 20. Participants will help the environment
by clearing the natural areas of garbage and
invasive plants. For further information or to

954-357-8712. Subsequent public workdays will be
held Wednesday, November 17, at Helene Klein
Pineland Preserve, 4701 W. Hillsboro Blvd., Coconut
Creek; and Wednesday, December 15, at Highlands
Scrub.
Parks and Recreation
has also scheduled EcoAction Days starting in
October 2010 and running through May 2011. The
workdays are held on the first Saturday of the month
at Fern Forest Nature Center in Coconut Creek, Oct.
2; the second Saturday of the month at Long Key
Natural Area & Nature Center in Davie and Secret
Woods Nature Center in Dania Beach, Oct. 9; and the
third Saturday of the month at the Anne Kolb Nature
Center in Hollywood and Deerfield Island Park in
Deerfield Beach, Oct. 16. These volunteer workdays
run from 9 a.m. to noon except at Deerfield Island,
where the time-frame is 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Volunteers are asked to
bring gloves, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent and
drinking water, and they should wear long pants,
closed-toe shoes and long sleeves. Preregistration
is required, and all participants must fill out a
volunteer form. Children must have a permission form
signed by a parent/guardian. For further

Northeast
56th Street Bridge to be Closed Beginning October 11
Broward County Highway and
Bridge Maintenance Division has announced that the
Northeast 56th Street Bridge at Northeast 14th
Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, will be closed for repairs
for 21 days beginning Monday, October 11.Variable
message boards will be set out Monday, October 4, to
alert the public of the closure. Detour signs will
be prominently displayed to reroute traffic. |

New River
Greenway Now Open for Recreation
The Florida Department of
Transportation (FDOT) has officially turned over the
New River Greenway to Broward County, the first
segment of a planned countywide network of safe and
clean bicycle, pedestrian paths, nature trails and
waterways. Residents can now recreate along the
greenway that parallels I-595 from 136th Avenue to
University Drive in Plantation. The New River
Greenway is part of a $5.9 million grant provided by
the FDOT to Broward County. However, when plans to
build the I-595 Express Corridor got underway, the
location of the planned Greenway was modified and
completed by FDOT.
An additional segment of the
Greenway from east of Davie Road to State Road
84/Marina Mile is currently being built. Broward
County has plans to further expand the Greenway west
to Markham Park and will enhance the Greenway with
installation of benches, shelter, landscaping and
additional improvements. For more information on

Broward County’s yearlong 365
Food Drive continues through the month of October
with a focus on canned and instant soups. Visit any
of the 12 collection sites across the County to
donate your favorite non-perishable food items.
Small toiletry items are also appreciated.
Collection boxes are available at the Governmental
Center, Government Center West, main and regional
courthouses, all Broward County libraries, Fort
Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport
Administration building, and Port Everglades

Animal Care
Announces New Hours
Broward
County’s Animal Care Adoption Center at 1870 S.W. 39th
Street, Fort Lauderdale, has extended its weekend operating
hours to include Sundays, giving families an extra
opportunity to come out and adopt a pet, or find a pet that
has been lost. The shelter is now open for adoptions and to
reclaim lost pets Tuesday through Friday from 1 to 6 p.m.,
and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Pompano
Beach Adoption Center at 3100 N.W. 19th Terrace is open
Tuesday through Friday from 1 to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 11

Get Back to Your Eco-Roots
If you want to restore
your piece of South Florida paradise to its eco-roots, a
good place to start is getting involved with the Broward
County Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society, which
meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the
Parks Extension Education Section in Davie. The purpose of
the group is "to promote the preservation, conservation, and
restoration of the native plants and native plant
communities of Florida." Tours, meetings and lectures are a
just a few of the offerings this group hosts. Its Web site
offers a wealth of information, from event calendars to
plant guides, from policy and legislature initiatives to

Broward County Awarded $27 Million to
Stabilize Hard-hit Neighborhoods
Broward County recently received more than
$27 million to assist communities struggling to reverse the
effects of the foreclosure crisis. Broward County will
individually receive $5,457,535 and 13 Broward County cities
will also receive funding. The grants represent a third
round of funding through HUD's Neighborhood Stabilization
Program (NSP) and will provide targeted emergency assistance
to state and local governments to acquire, redevelop or
demolish foreclosed properties. A total of $1 billion
dollars will be distributed nationwide. The state of Florida
will receive an estimated $208 million, the largest award
given to any single state in the country.

"Know the Flow" Presentation for
Homeowner Associations
The Natural Resources Planning and
Management Division offers a free,
fun and informative, 20-minute “Know the Flow”
presentation to homeowner associations that
teaches residents how to save money, save water
and “go green.” All attendees receive prizes.

Appreciation Events at Airport
The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport will thank
all of its passengers for flying at the annual Passenger Appreciation Events,
October 4-8. Events will take place in all the Terminals and will include
giveaways, photo opportunities, cooking demonstrations, tasting events,
live entertainment, and more. Airlines, shops, and restaurants will
host events throughout the week. Passengers can participate at the
terminals on the following dates and times:

Broward County Library Presents
a Free Budget Workshop for Teens
“Buxx for Teens,” a workshop geared for
teenagers who want to be more money-savvy, will be held
Monday, October 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lauderhill Mall
Library, 4257 N.W. 12th St., Lauderhill. At this workshop
teens will learn: how to save money, how to use what they
get and prepare a budget, how to make money with money and
how to use a credit card to stay out of debt. This program is funded by Broward County
Libraries and the Broward Public Library Foundation through the

“Snack Shack” Donation Drive
Results in 4 Tons of Pet Food
Pet food, totaling more than 8,500 pounds,
will help to feed dogs and cats in need at Broward County Animal Care
Adoption Centers - all due to contributions made to the “Pet Snack Shack”
donation drive, which ended August 31. The Snack Shack food drive
offered Broward County residents and employees the opportunity to
donate cat and dog food, pet treats and cat litter at special
“Pet Snack Shack” collection boxes located at various government
facilities, including libraries, courthouses, the downtown
Governmental Center and Government Center West. In addition to
donations by County employees and members of the public,
donations were also received from Pet Supermarket,
Wal-Mart and Keiser University at the
Pembroke Pines campus.
All donations will go to feed and care for the dogs
and cats at Broward County Animal Care’s two adoption
centers, located in Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach.
The amount of food received is expected to help feed the
shelter pets through the end of the year. For more information,
