Educational Campaign Designed to Save Babies’ Lives
The Broward County Office of Medical Examiner and
Trauma Services has partnered with Healthy Mothers,
Healthy Babies Coalition of Broward County, Inc.,
and launched an educational outreach campaign to
prevent babies from dying due to unsafe sleep
environments. Over the next six months, residents
will see advertising on Broward County Transit buses
which calls for care providers to put babies to
sleep on their backs in a crib with no toys, pillows
or loose blankets. Last year, 17 babies died in the
County due to unsafe sleep environments. For more

Final Redistricting Workshop is October 3;
Commission Workshop and Public Hearings to Follow
The final public workshop
addressing the redistricting of the Broward County
Commission will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday,
October 3, in Mangrove Hall at West Lake Park-Anne
Kolb Nature Center, 751 Sheridan St. in Hollywood.
The public is encouraged to attend and participate
in the process.
There will be a County Commission Workshop on
redistricting at 9 a.m. Tuesday, October 18;
followed by two public hearings at 5:30 p.m. on
Tuesday, November 8, and Tuesday, December 13, all
in Room 430 of the Broward County Governmental
Center, 115 S. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale. The
Workshop will be
webcast. The Public Hearings will be
televised and
webcast. Redistricting is based upon 2010 Census
data and required by the Broward County Charter to
balance the populations of the nine single member
districts and ensure residents have equal
representation on the County Commission. For more

Broward B-Cycle Bike Sharing Program Hits the Road
This Fall
Broward County has launched a
bike sharing program with B-cycle, LLC. Riders from
Hallandale to Pompano Beach can access public
bicycles for short trips around town for leisure or
for first or last extensions of their public
commute. To access bikes, residents and tourists can
either register on the
B-cycle website
or use the self-service kiosks called B-stations.
B-stations are located at the Governmental Center
Parking Garage at 151 S.W. Second Street; the Main
Library; the Downtown Broward Bus Terminal; the 540
Building near the Broward County Courthouse;
Hollywood North Beach Park and T.Y. Park in
Hollywood. |

Public
Meeting on Everglades Holiday Park Set for October 5
Broward
County Parks and Recreation will host a public meeting so
residents can offer suggestions, voice concerns and ask
questions about recreational needs at Everglades Holiday
Park, located at 21940 Griffin Road, Fort Lauderdale. A
briefing on the update to the 2008 Conceptual Master Plan
for the park will be presented. The meeting will be held in
Oak Hammock Hall at Long Key Natural Area and Nature Center,
3501 S.W. 130th Ave., Davie, from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday,

Parks and Libraries Now Open Daily
Broward County parks and
libraries are expanding their hours of operation back to
seven days a week, after experiencing a temporary reduction
in hours in 2010 due to budget constraints. The County’s 33
regional and neighborhood parks, nature centers and natural
areas are now open seven days a week, except for the day
after Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Deerfield Island Park
continues to be open Saturdays and Sundays only.
Beginning October 2,
six regional libraries will reopen on Sundays, from 10
a.m. to 6 p.m., restoring access to select library locations
seven days a week at African-American Research Library and
Cultural Center, and North Regional/Broward College, South
Regional/Broward College, Northwest Regional, Southwest
Regional and West Regional libraries. The Alvin Sherman
Library at Nova Southeastern University remains open Sunday,
from 11 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. For a complete list of parks and

County’s Economic Engines Remain
Strong Despite Troubled Economy
Broward County’s three economic engines are
reporting positive growth, despite the challenges of a
struggling economy. Greater Fort Lauderdale
Convention & Visitors Bureau reported the highest
hotel occupancy since 2006 in July 2011, up 7.8 percent from
2010. The County hosts nearly 11 million visitors from
around the world each year.
Port Everglades
reported a 2.4 percent
growth in cruise passengers in the third quarter over
the same time period last year, with more than 3.4 million
cruise passengers passing through the Port compared to
nearly 3.1 million passengers last year.
Fort
Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport marked its
23rd consecutive month of passenger growth, reporting
July 2011 as the busiest July on record. Total airport
traffic, January through July 2011, was 14.3 million, up 7
percent from the same period in 2010.

“Dine Out Lauderdale” Event is Back
for Fifth Straight Year
It's that delicious time of year again as
Greater "Fork" Lauderdale celebrates its fifth consecutive
year of “Dine Out Lauderdale,” a six-week culinary event
promoting the area's gourmet restaurants and renowned chefs.
From October 1 through November 10, three-course meals are

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month
During national Adopt a Shelter Dog Month in
October, Broward County invites residents to drop by the
Animal Care and Adoption Center to visit with all the
wonderful animals looking for a new home. While you’re
there, you can pick up pet supplies, including food bowls,
toys and other merchandise, at the brand new
Pawtique Retail Shop. Those interested are encouraged to
sign up to become a foster care parent. Animal Care is
always looking for responsible individuals, over age 18, to
be temporary caretakers for some of the many orphaned
puppies and abandoned kittens received each month at the
shelter.
The
monthly series of rabies clinics continues on Friday,
October 7, from noon to 5 p.m., at the Fort Lauderdale
Adoption Center, 1870 S.W. 39 St. Get your pets vaccinated
against rabies and receive a Broward County pet license for
just $15 per pet; cash only payment accepted. Pet owners
must prove Broward County residency by producing a valid
Florida driver’s license or current utility bill. No
appointment is necessary and customers are taken on a first
come, first served basis. All dogs must be on leashes and
all cats must be in carriers.

Residents Can Learn
to Save Money and Water with "Know the Flow" Presentation
The Natural Resources
Planning and Management Division offers a free, fun and
informative, 20-minute “Know the Flow” presentation to
homeowner associations that teaches residents how to save
money, save water and “go green.” All attendees receive

Broward County Speakers Bureau features more than 150
County staff professionals who can speak to homeowner

BCT Awarded $197,400
in Transit Security Grant Program Funds
Broward County Transit
(BCT) will receive $197,400 in grant funds from the U.S.
Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency
Management Agency which will be used to update transit

New River Bridges
Will Close Briefly October 9 for Breast Walk
Three bridges over the
New River in downtown Fort Lauderdale will temporarily close
to boat and vehicular traffic on Sunday, October 9, from 9
to 10:30 a.m., for the annual “Making Strides Against Breast
Cancer Walk.” Affected are the Andrews Avenue, Southeast
Third Avenue and Seventh Avenue bridges, for the cancer walk
that begins at Huizenga Plaza. Motorists are asked to plan
ahead and take alternate routes.

Code Program May Benefit Residents with Insurance Discounts
Broward County Permitting, Licensing and Consumer Protection
Division’s new ranking with the Insurance Service
Office’s (ISO) Building Code Effectiveness Grading Schedule
can earn residents of Unincorporated Broward County,
Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, Hillsboro Beach and Lazy Lake up to a
10 percent discount on homeowners insurance policies. The
ISO rating reflects Broward County’s ongoing commitment to a
well administered building code program that ultimately
benefits homeowners with discounted rates on homeowners
insurance. Discounts will vary by insurance provider.
