Vehicle Registration Information

PLEASE NOTE:

Broward County governmental offices will be closed on Friday, May 28th as well as Monday, May 31st (Memorial Day). The closing is due to an unpaid employee furlough day as part of budget-related reductions to avoid an increase in the County property tax rate.

In Addition, the hours of operation for the Auto Tag office in Plantation will be 8:30 - 4:30 for the week of May 24- 27, 2010.

Under state law, if you own a motor vehicle registered in Florida, you must renew your tag (vehicle registration) each year by midnight of your birthday. If the vehicle is registered in a company name, it will probably renew in June. If it is leased, the month of renewal may vary. Trucks with an empty weight over 5000 pounds renew in December. When you renew your tag, you must present proof of Florida insurance including Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and at least $10,000 in Property Damage Liability (PDL). You must also supply the driver's license number of the owner and co-owner, if applicable.

If you own a mobile home, you must renew your registration by December 31st. If you own a vessel that is registered in Florida, it will expire midnight of your birthday or June 30th if in a company name.

You can now renew your registrations by internet.

Beginning September 1, 2009, certain fees for Auto Tags, Driver License and Motor Vehicle services will be changing.  The new fees were established by the Florida Legislature as part of the annual budget development process for the State. New residents may apply for their auto tag (or mobile home) registration and a Florida title at any one of the County's Auto Tag Agencies. Since states have different requirements, please call the Auto Tag Information Center at (954) 765-4697 before you visit a tag agency to insure that you bring the proper documents. Your Florida vehicle title is processed in Tallahassee and will be mailed to you by the Florida Division of Motor Vehicles. Be prepared to submit proof of required Florida insurance, the driver's license number(s) of all owners and the color of the vehicle.
